For Children

Archaeological Dig

For two hours under the guidance of teachers or trained volunteers, children simulate the excavation of a site modeled on the Payomet weetu (summer house) that the Pilgrims explored when they visited Truro in 1620. Working with child-size tools, the fledgling archeologists will find, describe, and record the location of artifacts. Like real archaeologists, they will draw conclusions about the people who lived there, how they obtained and processed food, and the kind of life they (the Payomet) led.

Tuesdays from 10:00 AM to Noon through September (reservations required)

- Special arrangements can be made for groups of five or more during the summer.

- Designed for children 7 to 10 years old.

- Each session is two hours long.

- $5.00 fee. All materials will be supplied.

- Dress comfortably.

Please reserve a space in advance. Call 508-487-3397 or email info@trurohistorical.com.

Museum History Detectives

A favorite activity for children (both readers and non-readers) is the search for historical objects based on a set of clues. Children follow up on leads to find artifacts and other items, and all “detectives” receive prizes. No reservations required.

For more information call 508-487-3397 or email info@trurohistorical.com.

Cemetery Tour

Cemetery tombstones and monuments tell stories about people: their families, their spouses, and how they lived and died (e.g. in a storm at sea). Join our guide, Cemetery Commissioner Bob Masson, on this informative and entertaining tour of local cemeteries as he makes history come alive.

Pilgrim Walk

Join our guide, Dr. Robin Robertson, on this leisurely walk to Corn Hill in Truro. In 1620 a party of men from the Mayflower, in search of a suitable location for a settlement, discovered a cache of corn buried by Payomet Indians. A few days later they discovered several uninhabited Indian houses called weetus. Learn about the mindset of the men and the choices they faced as they discovered food and other items they deemed necessary for survival during their first winter.

Meet at 1:00 PM at Great Hollow Beach, upper parking area. Please reserve spaces in advance at 508-487-3397, or email us at info@trurohistorical.org for information.
